How to Start a Chinese Composition (Opening Phrases)

The opening of a Chinese composition sets the tone for everything that follows. A strong start grabs the reader's attention and signals to the examiner that your child is a confident writer.

Why the Opening Matters

MOE composition marking considers overall impression. An engaging opening creates a positive first impression, while "那天,我和妈妈去..." (That day, mum and I went to...) tells the examiner this is a basic-level composition.

5 Effective Opening Techniques

1. Start with Dialogue (对话开头)

Jump straight into a conversation to create immediate interest.

Example: "快点!迟到了!" 妈妈的声音把我从梦中惊醒。 ("Hurry! We're late!" Mum's voice startled me awake.)

2. Start with Scenery (景色开头)

Paint a picture with weather or surroundings to set the mood.

Example: 清晨的阳光透过窗帘,温柔地洒在我的脸上。窗外,鸟儿在枝头欢快地歌唱。 (Morning sunlight gently fell through the curtains onto my face. Outside, birds sang happily on the branches.)

3. Start with Sound (声音开头)

Use onomatopoeia or sound descriptions to create atmosphere.

Example: "叮铃铃——" 闹钟的响声打破了早晨的宁静。 ("Ring ring ring——" The alarm clock broke the morning silence.)

4. Start with a Question (疑问开头)

Ask a thought-provoking question to engage the reader.

Example: 你有没有遇过一件让你终身难忘的事?在我小学三年级的时候,就发生了这样一件事。 (Have you ever experienced something unforgettable? When I was in Primary 3, something like that happened to me.)

5. Start with Action (动作开头)

Begin with a character doing something to create momentum.

Example: 我飞快地冲出教室,书包在身后"砰砰"地拍打着。 (I dashed out of the classroom, my schoolbag thumping against my back.)

Openings to Avoid

  • 那天... (That day...) — too generic
  • 今天,我要写一篇关于... (Today, I want to write about...) — breaks the fourth wall
  • 从前从前... (Once upon a time...) — too childish for P4+

Practice Makes Perfect

The best way to improve composition openings is to practice writing them. Try this exercise: give your child a composition topic and ask them to write three different openings using three different techniques. Then discuss which one works best and why.

Building Blocks: Vocabulary

Every good opening requires the right words. A child who can't recall 温柔 (gentle) or 宁静 (peaceful) will default to simpler, less impressive alternatives. Strong vocabulary is the foundation of strong writing.
