Chinese Composition Writing Tips for Singapore Students

Chinese composition is often the most challenging part of MOE Chinese for Singapore students. It requires combining vocabulary, grammar, idioms, and storytelling skills into a coherent piece — all within a time limit.

The MOE Composition Format

P3-P4: Picture Composition (看图作文)

Students write a story based on a series of pictures. Key skills:

  • Following the picture sequence logically
  • Adding descriptive details beyond what's shown
  • Using dialogue to make the story come alive

P5-P6: Guided Composition (命题作文)

Students write based on a topic or prompt. Key skills:

  • Planning before writing
  • Developing a clear beginning, middle, and end
  • Using varied vocabulary and expressions

5 Tips That Actually Work

1. Plan Before Writing

Spend 5 minutes planning. Jot down:

  • What happens in each paragraph
  • 2-3 good phrases to include
  • The emotional arc (happy → problem → solution → reflection)

2. Strong Opening

Don't start with "那天..." (That day...). Use dialogue, scenery, or action instead. See our guide to composition opening phrases for specific examples.

3. Show, Don't Tell

Weak: 我很开心。(I was very happy.) Strong: 我高兴得手舞足蹈,脸上的笑容怎么也止不住。(I danced with joy, unable to stop the smile on my face.)

4. Use Idioms Sparingly but Well

One well-placed 成语 (idiom) is worth more than five forced ones. See our idiom guide for the most useful ones by level.

5. End with Reflection

MOE markers love endings where the character learns something:

  • 这件事让我明白了... (This event taught me that...)
  • 从那以后,我再也不... (From then on, I never again...)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing up 的、地、得 — 的 for descriptions, 地 for actions, 得 for results
  • Run-on sentences — Break long sentences with appropriate punctuation
  • Wrong measure words — 一个人、一只狗、一本书、一棵树
  • Inconsistent tense — Stay in past tense for narratives

The Foundation: Vocabulary

Every composition tip assumes your child has the vocabulary to execute it. A child who knows "高兴得手舞足蹈" but can't recall basic words like "突然" or "终于" will still struggle. Consistent vocabulary practice is the foundation everything else builds on.
