P6 Chinese Oral Exam: Tips and Practice Passages
The PSLE Chinese oral exam can feel intimidating, but with the right preparation, your child can approach it with confidence. Here's what Singapore parents need to know about the P6 Chinese oral component.
PSLE Chinese Oral Format
The oral exam has two parts:
Part 1: Reading Aloud (朗读)
Your child reads a passage aloud. Examiners assess:
- Pronunciation (发音) — Are the tones correct?
- Fluency (流利) — Is the reading smooth, without excessive pauses?
- Expression (感情) — Does the reading convey the passage's meaning?
Part 2: Conversation (会话)
Based on a picture prompt, the examiner asks questions. This tests:
- Content (内容) — Are the responses relevant and detailed?
- Language (语言) — Is the vocabulary appropriate and varied?
- Communication (交流) — Can the child express ideas clearly?
Common Oral Topics
The picture prompts typically relate to everyday scenarios:
- School life: Classroom activities, CCAs, school events
- Family: Family outings, helping at home, relationships
- Community: Neighbourhood activities, helping others
- Values: Kindness, responsibility, perseverance, environmental awareness
- Singapore culture: Festivals, hawker centres, kampung spirit
Preparation Tips
For Reading Aloud
- Read Chinese texts daily — newspapers, storybooks, textbook passages
- Record and listen — Record your child reading and play it back
- Focus on tones — Many students lose marks on tone accuracy
- Practice pacing — Not too fast, not too slow, with natural pauses at punctuation
For Conversation
- Practice expressing opinions — "I think... because..."
- Use idioms sparingly — One well-placed chengyu is better than three forced ones
- Prepare for follow-up questions — Examiners often ask "why?" or "can you explain more?"
- Talk about personal experiences — Genuine stories are more convincing than rehearsed answers

The Vocabulary Foundation
Oral fluency depends on vocabulary. If your child hesitates because they can't recall the right word, their fluency score suffers. Building a strong vocabulary foundation through consistent practice — not just before the exam — makes a real difference.
